About Non Tech
I wrote this guide in 2021 and it’s been living as a private doc ever since. I’d share it with every student I chatted with looking for a non-technical job in tech. Probably sent to over 100 people at this point, so thought it was time to share properly!Â
Some things you just can’t fake. I felt this more than ever in 2018 during an interview for a software engineering internship on the Apple iCloud team. As I sat on the other end of the screen from the interviewer, keenly aware of the seconds passing by as the screen remained blank, we both came to the conclusion that the internship wouldn’t be such a good fit for me. To my interviewer, if you’re reading this…I really did enjoy our conversation, and thanks for saying “you don’t know how to code” in the nicest way possible.
Despite the initial rejection from Apple, I knew I wanted to work in tech, just in a non-technical role. With software engineering, product management, and data science being the only careers frequently discussed on campus, I was determined to explore what else was out there, but I had heard the trope that startups let you wear many different “hats,” and I wanted to try them all on.
After college, I found a two-person, Sequoia-backed startup (since acquired), and throughout my year and a half there, it felt like I held every non-technical role possible – constantly doing whatever needed to get done from marketing to sales to customer success and everything in between.
As I’ve found, there are plenty of entry-level positions and opportunities in tech that are just as valuable as engineering roles. In fact 43% of jobs in tech are non-technical. Your options aren’t just management consulting and finance–contrary to what it may feel like on campus!
